BUDDIES |
WHAT ARE BUDDIES?
Buddies are consistent, keen mentors and role models who are passionate and leadership orientated friends to our players. Their responsibilities during games and practices are to keep their friend safe and help them work towards their team and personal goals. They assist their friend where needed while promoting independence and having the most fun possible!
Challenger players have various cognitive and physical disabilities and will need a variety of different creative approaches to assistance. Some players will need help holding a bat and swinging while others will need prompting and encouragement at the plate. Some players will need help pushing their wheelchairs around the bases, others will need help keeping on the base path.
Some players will be able to catch and throw a ball, others will need your assistance. All players will need mentors as a means of safety (blocking a hit ball)
BEING A BUDDY IS A WIN-WIN!
Buddies will gain valuable experience and life skills in leadership, mentorship and volunteer work with the special needs population not available anywhere else!
For weekly dedicated Buddies, they have the opportunity to use Manitoba Challenger Baseball as a reference on their resume and Buddy Hours to complete required volunteer community hours. There may also be opportunity for post-secondary scholarships!
