WHAT ARE BUDDIES?
As a buddy, you will be paired with 1-2 athletes, helping them participate in a baseball game while encouraging independence, teamwork, helping them reach their goals, and have fun.  No prior baseball experience is required- just enthusiasm and a willingness to be a mentor, cheerleader, and friend.

Expectations of a buddy
  • Arrive 15 minutes early. Time commitment is 60-90 minutes per week
  • For team buddies, please wear your own uniform. All other buddies will be provided a buddy t-shirt
  • Support and encourage your athlete
  • Help your athlete to stay safe and focused
  • Model positive behavior and sportsmanship
  • Step back and encourage independence
What may feel different from traditional baseball
  • Flexible or modified rules
  • Repeating plays or turns
  • No score keeping
  • Different levels of participation
  • Big emotions or celebrations
  • Slower or faster pace than expected
Challenger athletes have various cognitive and physical disabilities and may need a variety of different creative approaches to assistance.  Some athletes will need help holding a bat and swinging while others will need prompting and encouragement at the plate. Some athletes will need help pushing their wheelchairs around the bases, others will need help keeping on the base path. Some athletes will be able to catch and throw a ball independently, others will need your assistance.  All players will need mentors as a means of safety (blocking a hit ball).

Buddies will gain valuable experience and life skills in leadership, mentorship and volunteer work.

Buddy hours can be used towards volunteer community hours.
